NJ ASK persective

I took the NJ ASK on May 8-12. The first two days were Language Art Literacy days. The first day there were three section. Two open-ended and one persuasive writing. It was very easy. The second day was Two open-endeds and Two writing pieces. It was quite hard. The writing prompts were hard everyone of the open -endeds were easy. One of them was stupid. It was a girl packed a sandwich and a piece of cake for lunch when she got to lunch there were only crumbs of her cake left what happened? Wasn't that stupid? And the other one was just hard. Honestly, I probably did a lot better in Math than English. I thought there was lots of writing.

" The function of education is to teach one to think critically. Intelligence plus character-- that is the goal of true education." (Martin Luther King Jr. 1929-1963)

You don’t have to be smart to be intelligent. You just need character, and think outside the box. Stated by Martin Luther King Jr., "The function of education is to teach one to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education." To think outside the picture is thinking critically, and intelligence and character can get you real education.
To make my baby cousin Jai, 5, learn the respect and care for others I teach him, to think critically. Since my cousin is young he doesn’t have a lot of manners so teaching him proper educate is the first step. Teaching how to be nice and respectful and share is just that. Also, he is a older brother, his younger brother Krish is only two years old so, I thought and if I teach Jai about manners and other things he will teach Krish too! Jai, and Krish both have lots of character, since they are so young they explore things so they learn facts making them intelligent. Said in the quote Intelligents, and character is true education, Jai and Krish both have that.
Aslam Bin Laden is a very intelligent person. All though he is terribly bad and kills innocent people he thinks critically.  Thinking intelligently, and critically he send people that work for him in battle and killing so he is safe and his people ether die or go to jail. For example 9/11 the attack of the twin towers he was not in the plane his people were therefore he is a coward because he let those people die instead of himself. But then again his people were just as bad because they decide to do these things.   Sadly 9/11 killed many, many people and too think Bin Laden was actually satisfied with what he did.
Anybody can be intelligent but not smart, just think of what Bin Laden did he is intelligent but not smart for the things he did. “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” (Abraham Lincoln) Bin Laden thought he was please everybody in Pakistan he is a failure for thinking that wrong.

Smoking persuasive

There are many harmful things that can effect you body in bad ways and smoking is one of them. Smoking effects your body because of the ingredients in it such as nicotine. Nicotine is a harmful drug that causes the addiction for smokers. People may have a couple of great things to say about smoking but there are also thousands of horrible things. In the following paragraph you'll find out more about smoking and cigarette's.
There are so many reasons smoking is horrible. First reason is that you will get bad breath and yellow teeth. Smokers get yellow teeth and bad breathe because of the products in cigarette's. Also, there is no benefit of smoking. Many smokers say they smoke because it releases stress and for fun but they are ruining their bodies. In a recent poles of Herbert Hoover Middle School's sixth graders, 100% of students said there is no benefit of smoking. This is an good that they think this way because they don't want dirty teeth and a smelly breath.
The second reason smoking is bad is that is causes nasal and breathing problems. The problem with smoking more and more is that you can get asthma. In recent poles 25% of people said this is a big problem. Would you smoke if you would get breathing problems? You can also get mouth and lung cancer which can kill people over a period of time. Over 50% of people say this is the worst possible affect of smoking. This is partially correct because it can put smokers in horrible condition. Moreover, smokers can get heart disease which they can stay alive but suffer forever. Lastly smoking is bad because smokers can have financial problems. Cigarette's are a lot of dollars and can put some addicts in debt. Right now, some cigarette boxes like Marbolo cost more than $6.00 and many smokers have one pack a day. The average amount of money spent every year because of cigarettes is about 8,000 dollars. Why would you want to waste your hard earns money?
Smoking is a dangerous addiction in which poeple are harming their bodies. Smokers should not try to quit smoking automatically because they are only killing themselves this way. Quitting should be a slow process and smokers should get help from outside resources such as nicotine patches. Would people smoke if what happened in the inside of their body showed on the outside? Furthermore people may have there personal opinion about smoking but some day they will suffer or pass away because of it.

School Uniforms :)

FCAs                                                                                 Sweta Patel
1.      Supporting details                                                         March 16, 2009
2.     Parallel structure                                                            English 6-1
3.     Sophisticated vocabulary                                               School Uniforms

Dear Dr. Richard O’ Malley,
There’s always away to be different. “When we lose the right to be different, we lose the privilege to be free.” (Charles Evens Hughes, U.S Supreme Court Justice, 1925) Said by the board of Education students from grades K-12 will be required to wear school uniforms. If the school uniform passes school uniforms will have to be worn. The choice to have school uniforms will not be a wise decision; it will be unfair to have them. There are many reasons why school uniforms will not fit in Edison public schools. Freedom will be taking away for students, student’s sense of style will not be shown, and parent’s money will diminish.
There are many reason’s school uniform’s are infamous. Said by many parents there are too many expenses. There are way too many expenses when having school uniforms. You would only have to buy two-three uniforms but they would have to buy ten other outfits for outside of school. The expenses pile up and there is no money left for more important things that are needed. Eventually parents wouldn’t have a single cent left (economy) and won’t have money for anything. The problem with having school uniforms is the bills build up and there is no money left for other items that a needed to live.
There is freedom in the U.S.A, isn’t there? Well since there is, students should have it too. Freedom will be taking away from students and they will not be able to wear what they want too. They will be able to have freedom out of school but out of school there are parents and don’t give them freedom anyways. It will be unwise for the school board to have uniforms and they don’t know yet but when they establish school uniforms students will be very upset. There won’t be freedom at all so students will feel isolated from wearing school uniforms.
All students should be able to express there sense of style in there own way, school uniforms won’t help. Students won’t be able to express there sense of style and won’t be able to be fashionable. Students will be unable to wear hats, scarves, and other accessories. Students will be able to be factionists out of school but not in school were they can show it off.  Clearly students won’t be able to show the fashionable outfits in school and will feel trapped in school uniforms.
It is not the best choice to have mandatory school uniforms for students K-12. Edison public school student K-12 does not need to be isolated from others.  There freedom taking away, also too many expenses for parents to pay, and students can’t express there sense of style that will be washed away from school uniform. Not thinking about parents, and students, will be unwise and if we think about them we shouldn’t have school uniforms.

Reflection on the Commerical of Jazmin and I

I think mine and Jazmin's commercial was great, our commercial was on Pillow Pets. There was a lot of stuff I think we needed to work on like memorizing our lines better because Jazmin forgot her lines twice and I forgot mine once. I think that we should have planned it out for efficiently because we didn't really have everything ready in time. Also, we could have use a counterargument, a slogan, and a logo in the commercial. Some things I think we did well was our dressing because Jazmin was in pajamas and I was in the I love New York shirt and the sock, the reason I wore the I <3 NY shirt was because the Snokkeria (not a real store) is located in New York and by the name of the store you could tell I was acting like I was Snooki (from the Jersey Shore.) I did the famous poof that Snooki does to though it was not as perfect as Snooki's. At the end I was pretty satisfied with our commercial.

Coca Cola Ad

Most people can agree on what Santa Claus looks like -- jolly, with a red suit and a white beard. But he did not always look that way, and Coca-Cola® advertising actually helped shape this modern-day image of Santa.

2006 marked the 75th anniversary of the famous Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Starting in 1931, magazine ads for Coca-Cola featured St. Nick as a kind, jolly man in a red suit. Because magazines were so widely viewed, and because this image of Santa appeared for more than three decades, the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on our advertising.

Before the 1931 introduction of the Coca-Cola Santa Claus created by artist Haddon Sundblom, the image of Santa ranged from big to small and fat to tall. Santa even appeared as an elf and looked a bit spooky.

Through the centuries, Santa Claus has been depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to an elf. He has worn a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. The modern-day Santa Claus is a combination of a number of the stories from a variety of countries.

The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862; Santa was shown as a small elf-like figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years and along the way changed the color of his coat from tan to the now traditional red. Though some people believe the Coca-Cola Santa wears red because that is the Coke® color, the red suit comes from Nast's interpretation of St. Nick.

The Coca-Cola Company began its Christmas advertising in the 1920s with shopping-related ads in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post. The first Santa ads used a strict-looking Claus, in the vein of Thomas Nast.

At this time, many people thought of Coca-Cola as a drink only for warm weather. The Coca-Cola Company began a campaign to remind people that Coca-Cola was a great choice in any month. This began with the 1922 slogan "Thirst Knows No Season," and continued with a campaign connecting a true icon of winter -- Santa Claus -- with the beverage.

In 1930, artist Fred Mizen painted a department store Santa in a crowd drinking a bottle of Coke. The ad featured the world's largest soda fountain, which was located in the department store of Famous Barr Co. in St. Louis, Mo. Mizen's painting was used in print ads that Christmas season, appearing in The Saturday Evening Post in December 1930.

1936 Coca-Cola Santa cardboard store displayArchie Lee, the D'Arcy Advertising Agency executive working with The Coca-Cola Company, wanted the next campaign to show a wholesome Santa as both realistic and symbolic. In 1931, The Coca-Cola Company commissioned Michigan-born illustrator Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus -- showing Santa himself, not a man dressed as Santa, as Mizen’s work had portrayed him.

1942 original oil painting - 'They Remembered Me'For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). Moore's description of St. Nick led to an image of Santa that was warm, friendly, pleasantly plump and human. For the next 33 years, Sundblom painted portraits of Santa that helped to create the modern image of Santa -- an interpretation that today lives on in the minds of people of all ages, all over the world.

The first Coca-Cola Santa Claus image created by artist Haddon Sunblom appeared in 1931 in The Saturday Evening Post. From 1931 to 1964, Coca-Cola advertising showed Santa delivering (and playing!) with toys, pausing to read a letter and enjoy a Coke, playing with children who stayed up to greet him and raiding the refrigerators at a number of homes. The original oil paintings Sundblom created were adapted for Coca-Cola advertising in magazines, store displays, billboards, posters, calendars and even plush dolls. Many of those items today are popular collectibles.

1947 'Hospitality' Coca-Cola Santa Claus original paintingThe Coca-Cola Santa made its debut in 1931 in The Saturday Evening Post and appeared regularly in that magazine, as well as Ladies Home Journal, National Geographic, The New Yorker and others. The instantly popular ad campaign appeared each season, reflecting the times. One ad even featured Santa in a rocket!

The 1951 Coca-Cola Santa Claus artwork shows Santa reviewing his list of good boys and girls; no bad children are listed.Sundblom continued to create new visions of Santa Claus through 1964. For decades after, Coca-Cola advertising has featured Santa’s image based on Sundblom’s original works.

1964 Coca-Cola Santa posterThese original paintings by Haddon Sundblom are some of the most prized pieces in the art collection of our Company’s Archives Department, and have been on exhibit around the world, including at the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the Isetan Department Store in Tokyo and the NK Department Store in Stockholm.

The Coca-Cola Santa has had a powerful, enduring quality that continues to resonate today. Many of the original paintings can be seen on display at World of Coca-Cola Atlanta or touring during the holiday season.

Did you know?
It's a common misconception that Santa wears a red coat because red is the color of Coca-Cola. In fact, Santa appeared in a red coat before artist Haddon Sundblom painted him for Coca-Cola advertising.

People loved the Coca-Cola Santa images and paid such close attention to them, that when anything changed, they sent letters to The Coca-Cola Company. One year, Santa's large belt was backwards (perhaps because artist Haddon Sundblom used himself as a model and painted by looking in a mirror). Another year, Santa Claus appeared without a wedding ring, causing fans to write asking what happened to Mrs. Claus.

Artist Haddon Sundblom used himself as a model for the Coca-Cola Santa. In the beginning, artist Haddon Sundblom painted the image of Santa using a live model -- his friend, Lou Prentiss, a retired salesman. When Prentiss passed away, Sundblom used himself as a model, painting while looking into a mirror. After the 1930s, he used photographs to create the image of St. Nick.

The children who appear with Santa Claus in Haddon Sundlbom’s paintings were based on Sundblom's neighbors. However, the neighbors were both girls, and Sundblom simply changed one to a boy in his paintings!

The dog in the 1964 original Santa Claus painting by artist Haddon Sundblom was actually a gray poodle belonging to the neighborhood florist. Sundblom painted the animal with black fur, instead, to make the dog stand out in the holiday scene.

1931 cardboard carton for a six-pack of Coke bottles featuring SantaThe image of Santa Claus has appeared on cartons for bottles of Coca-Cola since 1931, when artist Haddon Sundblom first created his version of St. Nick. Early cartons completely covered the bottles of Coke -- almost as if they were inside a box -- and had a handle at the very top. The carton itself was created -- and patented -- by the Coca-Cola system. Introduced in 1923, it allowed people to take home more bottles of Coke.

The Coca-Cola Polar Bear stars with Santa Claus on the 2006 store advertising for the U.S. Hispanic market. The Coca-Cola Polar Bear was introduced in 1993 as part of the "Always Coca-Cola" campaign. The first commercial featuring the bear showed was called "Northern Lights" and showed a group of bears watching a "movie" (the aurora borealis) and drinking from bottles of Coca-Cola.

In 1949 Coca-Cola Santa artwork featuring Sprite BoyThe "Sprite Boy" character, who appeared with Santa Claus and was used in Coca-Cola advertising in the 1940s and 50s, was also created by artist Haddon Sundblom. Though The Coca-Cola Company does have a drink called Sprite®, the Sprite Boy character was not named for the beverage. Sprite Boy's name came because he is a sprite -- an elf. Sprite Boy first appeared in ads in 1942, while the drink Sprite was not introduced until the 1960s.

1962 magazine ad featuring the Coca-Cola SantaIn 2001, the artwork from Haddon Sundblom's 1962 original painting was used as the basis for an animated TV commercial starring the Coca-Cola Santa. The ad was created by Academy Award-winning animator Alexandre Petrov.

Campaign

On Sept. 20 1863 union survivors of the Battle of Chickamauga began to steam into Chattanooga. Union commander Rosecrans was totally confused...he initially thought that the disaster of the right wing of his army had probably resulted in a total rout of his entire 58,000 Army Of The Cumberland (AoC). Later that night he would learn that six of his divisions had continued to maintain a position on the battle field most of the day.
In spite of what history tells us ...make no mistake at nightfall of Sept. 20, 1863 George Thomas and his force was forced from the battle field...they did not retire at their leisure or at their own pace. During the night and early the next day the AoC was in various degrees of demoralization. Many statements would be made later by officers wishing to minimize the Chickamauga defeat, but contemporary accounts are pretty clear the strategic center of the Union war effort was reeling.
When advised of the Chickamauga defeat Lincoln immediately sensed that the Union war effort was in trouble. He was faced with two very difficult problems. First the Ohio State elections where to be held on October 9 and with seeming stalemate in Virginia, repulse at Charleston S.C., the CONFEDERACY seemed to have just possibly recovered from its disasters of the summer and be on the verge of grabbing the strategic initiative.
On Sept. 23 Rosecrans tells all that will listen that the AoC will stay in Chattanooga and to please send help, and lots of help. On Sept. 24 without firing a shot Rosecrans withdraws all elements into the inner defenses of Chattanooga. Rosecrans actions include giving up strong positions on Lookout Mountain. He does this over the objections of Thomas.
The AoC immediately begins a frenzied effort to fortify the Chattanooga defenses within a week these defenses are declared by most Union observers to be nearly impregnable.
On the evening of Sept. 26 Lincoln and his cabinet order Hooker with two corps(11th and 12th) from the Army of the Potomac to reinforce Chattanooga.
Grant is ordered to have reinforcements from Vicksburg assembled in Memphis,  Tennessee for movement to Chattanooga. Burnside with some 18,000 men north of Knoxville Tennessee is ordered to move to the relief of Chattanooga. So within a matter of three days Lincoln has reacted by ordering to the aid of Chattanooga some 50,000 union reinforcements.
On the confederate side such decisive actions are non-existent. Braxton Bragg waits a full 36 hours following the end of the Battle of Chickamauga before he advances in force towards Chattanooga. Bragg apparently believes that the AoC is frantically preparing to leave Chattanooga and Bragg seems to be willing to have them go at their leisure. Forrest recons of Chattanooga indicate that the federals seem to be preparing to evacuate the city. The fiery Forrest ask for infantry help to press the advantage but all requests are turned down by Bragg. On Sept. 24 James Longstreet proposes to Bragg that the CS Army of Tennessee (AoT) should swing to its left cross the Tenn. River and completely cut off the AoC from middle Tennessee and possibly retreat. Bragg rejects the suggestion out of hand for two stated reasons. Bragg feels that the AoT lacks the necessary transport and logistical support to make the move and he is unwilling to leave east Tennessee to the forces of Ambrose Burnside. Instead of a grand turning movement off a vigorous pursuit Bragg orders a slow and cautious approach on Chattanooga itself.
On Sept. 26 elements of the AoT take position on Lookout Mountain and the siege of Chattanooga begins. Both armies are nearly mirror images of themselves as the siege begins at the end of Sept.1863. The AoC has a commander Rosecrans who seems to have lost his grip his communications betray such wild swings in emotions and lack of a coherent plan that they persuade Lincoln to comment that Rosecrans seems 'like a duck hit on the head'. There exist turmoil in the command structure of the AoC...two corps commanders Tom Crittenden and Alexander McDowell as well as previously highly regarded division commander Negley are relieved of command bending courts of inquiry to determine their roles in the disaster at Chickamauga. The four corps AoC is reformed into two corps with George Thomas and Gordon Granger the only corps commanders. The entire army is reorganized and many officers and units are shuffled around. The CS AoT also begins to develop discord and dissatisfaction within its officer corps. On Sept. 29 Bragg suspends two officers L. Polk and Tom Hindman for alleged failures during the Chickamauga campaign. Three days before on Sept. 26 Longstreet had written to Richmond and complained bitterly at Bragg's leadership and lack of directions. On October 1 1863 the city of Chattanooga, a dirty and muddy little settlement on the Tennessee River became the focal point of the American Civil War. At issue was perhaps the greatest prize in any war--- the strategic initiative! Which side , north or south , would dictate where and how the remainder of the war would be fought?

career unit

I learned a lot in my career unit. Something were I learned that getting into college is hard and you have too do a lot of work to complete every goal you have. And getting a job means interview time witch i have today. The college I went to is New York University to become a Cardiologist. One thing I didn't like about the career unit is it was very hard to get the work done and the interview was scary. One thing I liked about the interview is that we learned a lot of inspirational thing, and we learn how to get in to a college how to get a job and we took the S.A.T which I thought was pretty cool. On my S.A.T I got a 1530 out of 2400 which isn't that bad for my first time. Well Mrs. Patalano thanks for doing the career unit it helped me understand what it takes to get into a college and get a job. :]

Does Technology Make You Smarter?

To tell you the truth I think Technology goes both ways it can make you smarter and dumber. For example technology makes you smarter because of all the websites that give you information. That is how you do research as well. An example were technology makes you dumber is when you are in school and you hear a car or bus come and you just stare out the window. That's what make you dumber and smarter. And remember that Technology isn't always the solution to you problems

Welcome Miss.Caroll!

THINGS ABOUT ME: Hi, my name is Sweta Patel. The Elementry school I came from is Lincoln Elementry School. The two main things I like about middle school that we get to have passing from period to period and you have different students and teachers each class. I like to hangout with my friends, jump rope, play soocer, and ride my bike. I don't like homework, studing, and football. What I like about English is we always are entertained I use to hate English but Mrs.Patalano makes it fun! My strenghts are reading, jump roping, and singing. My weaknesses are writing, test, and quizes. Other things about me is I'm hard working, outgoing, talkitive, and kind.

THINGS ABOUT THE CLASS: Since we have 2 periods of English we do alot in one day. My class and I have 4 and 5 period. 4th period is usually the time we do the most work and Mrs.Patalano teaches us. 5th period we do light work. The things I like about English is Mrs.Patalano lets us go on break/passing, and the other thing is we have story time sometimes. The things I don't like about English is that on the writing we do I always get 70% and it lowers my average, and the smart clickers I like them but im not the best speller so I get a bad grade.

Originally I wanted to be a pediatrician, but than I thought I might as well help kids, adults everybody. The college I want to go to is Princeton University. With my 2300 SAT score and 3.8 GPA. By me completing this my mom dad sister and me will be proud. Also, I will be more confident in my work. Hopefully I will fulfill my dream.

My New Year's Revolution

The start of 2011 mean more goals have to be acheived to improve life. This year, my main goal to accomplish is to get better grades. I want to get better grades so that I will be more proud and confident of myself and I want to get the A honor roll. The better grades will help me succeed and fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor. In order to make this happen I will study when I have a test so that I am ready and prepared for it. Also, I will get extra help from my teachers so I understand more and my teachers understand that I am having trouble with that concept. Lastly, I will study the lesson I learn that day.
